970 Colour Sergeant Alfred Rose (right) joined the army in 1879, serving initially
with the Royal Artillery. However in 1884 he transferred as a Sergeant to the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment, then
stationed at Lucknow in India. In 1887 he accompanied the battalion to Burma to take part in the campaign against the dacoits
in that country. For this he was awarded the India General Service medal.
Shortly afterwards he returned to England to take his discharge. Thereafter
he became an instructor to the 1st Volunteer Battalion Leicestershire Regiment. Rose lived at Great Bowden and was a postman
in the Market Harborough area, earning the Imperial Service Medal for his services. Upon the outbreak of the Great
War he re-enlisted and served as an instructor at Glen Parva barracks, earning the Army Long Service and Good Conduct
medal. In the 1940s he was an In-Pensioner at the Royal Hospital, Chelsea.
