Private Harry Hill

2-8592 Pte Harry Hill (right) was born in Shepshed. He was serving with the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment in India upon the outbreak of the Great War, and travelled with them to France in 1914. He took part in the early battles of the war, including Neuve Chapelle in 1915. In the photo on this page he wears the black diamond of the 2nd battalion on his collar, commonly worn by other ranks in 1915. After the war he returned to Shepshed, where he was captain of the Crown and Anchor skittles team, until his untimely death in the 1930s. His medals include the 1914 Star, commonly known as the 'Mons Star'.
