4865517 Pte Frederick Huckerby (right) was born at Wigston near Leicester
in July 1920. He was working as an Edge Trimmer in the boot and shoe industry when he was called up for military service in
October 1940. In 1942 he proceeded with a reinforcement draft to join the 2nd battalion Leicestershire Regiment which was
at that time in the Middle East. Later the battalion moved to India for jungle warfare training, before moving into Burma
as part of Orde-Wingate's famous Chindit force. Huckerby was by this time a Corporal. By the spring of 1944, jungle warfare
had taken its toll on him and he was evacuated sick to the UK. After recovery he was posted as a Sergeant to the 1st/5th Leicesters,
which was by then a training unit, to teach recruits. Huckerby returned to civilian life in the spring of 1946, and lived
on Horsewell Lane in Wigston. He earned the 1939/45 Star, Africa Star with bar 'North Africa 1942-43', Burma Star, Defence
and War Medals.
